windows updates causing failing automatic repair process

updating windows 11 with updates causes my laptop to enter a diagnosis and automatic repair process which ends in a statement that the computer could not be repaired. this has happened 4 times in 5 months. from within the RE, Occasion 1 system restore solved the issue, occasion 2 all options failed ( restore, uninstall updates, self repair, command prompts, ) and system reset was performed. Occasion 3 again all options failed and had to do a windows reinstall from USB. ( repair from usb does not work) I’m now on occasion 4, and again left with reset or reinstall.

A command prompt bootrec / rebuild bcd returns … total identified windows installations:0

sfc /scannow failed on occ3 (could not start repair) but ran this time to 100% with identified corrupt clusters repaired, but on restart just went back to black screen auto repair process (failed)

It appears that the boot process cannot see the operating system and windows updates is corrupting the BIOS or the MBR

At my wits end, it’s an ASUS vivobook, ASUS customer support say it’s a windows issue and contact Microsoft. Love to speak to Microsoft but their support page is pants.

    Welcome Ian Blackmore,

I understand how frustrating it can be when your Windows 11 device repeatedly fails to boot after updates and ends up in an Automatic Repair loop, even after using recovery options and reinstalling.

Before moving forward, I would like to clarify a couple of things:

    • Is your system using UEFI (GPT) or Legacy BIOS (MBR), if known?
    • Does the issue happen immediately after every cumulative update, or only after certain updates?
    • Have you already followed the steps recommended by Q&A Assist?

For faster and more specialized assistance, I kindly recommend reaching out to Live Chat Support. Support agents are available to help you troubleshoot the issue in real time and provide more in‑depth guidance.  Please follow the steps below to connect with Live Chat Support.

    1. Visit the Microsoft Support contact page: Contact - Microsoft Support
    2. In the search bar provided on the page, type ""windows updates " and press Enter.
    3. Click on the "Get Help" button that appears.
    4. Scroll down the page until you see and click on the "Contact Support" option.
    5. When prompted to select your product or service, choose "Other Products".
    6. Look for and click on "Chat with a support agent in your web browser".
    7. When prompted, provide a valid contact email where Microsoft can reach you regarding your case.
    8. Explain your situation clearly: Be concise but provide all the relevant details.

Given repeated boot failures after Windows 11 updates and Automatic Repair not fixing the issue, use the built‑in recovery and repair tools in a structured way and, if needed, reinstall Windows while preserving data.

    1. Run Windows Update repair/reinstall (if you can still boot) If the system currently boots after one of the resets/reinstalls, use the built‑in “Fix problems using Windows Update” tool to repair system files and components without wiping apps or data:
    2. Open Settings > System > Recovery.
    3. Under Fix problems using Windows Update, select Reinstall now.
    4. Choose whether to allow automatic restart, then select OK.
    5. This downloads and reinstalls the current Windows build while preserving apps, files, and settings.

This is specifically designed to repair update‑related corruption.

    1. Use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) when updates break boot When an update causes the machine to loop into Automatic Repair again:
    2. Force WinRE:
      • Power on the device.
      • As soon as the Windows or ASUS logo appears, press and hold the power button to force shutdown.
      • Repeat this twice; on the third boot, Automatic Repair should appear.
      • Select Advanced options.
    3. In WinRE, try in this order:
      • Startup Repair (from Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair).
      • If Windows still does not boot, use System Restore if a restore point exists.
      • If restore is unavailable or fails and the system is still unstable, move to Reset.
    4. Reset Windows while keeping files If Automatic Repair and System Restore cannot stabilize the system, use Reset to get a clean OS while keeping personal files:
    5. In WinRE: Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
    6. Choose Keep my files.
    7. Prefer Cloud download if available (fresh image) or Local reinstall if offline.

This reinstalls Windows, removes apps and settings, but keeps personal files.

    1. Advanced repair for repeated corruption Because updates repeatedly corrupt the system, use the more advanced repair options when the OS is still bootable:
    2. Run DISM and SFC from an elevated Command Prompt:
      • Open Command Prompt as administrator.
      • Run:
        • DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
        • After it completes successfully, run: sfc /scannow
      • When both complete, try Windows Update again.
    3. If update failures persist, use the Reinstall Windows using Windows Update method described above to repair the current version.
    4. When everything fails: full clean installation If the system continues to break after updates even after repair/reinstall and Reset, perform a clean installation of Windows 11:
    5. Go to the Windows 11 software download page and select Download tool now to create installation media.
    6. Boot from the USB, back up any remaining data, then perform a clean install.

This removes all partitions and data on the system drive, so ensure backups are taken first.

    1. Use recovery options table as a guide For recurring issues:
    • If problems appear right after an update: use Reinstall Windows using Windows Update.
    • If problems started after an app or driver: use System Restore.
    • If the system has been unstable for a while: use Reset.
    • If Windows does not start or keeps looping: use Startup Repair from WinRE.

These tools are designed to address exactly the kind of repeated update‑related boot failures described.
