    Hi @Devin rodriguez,

I’d like to walk you through the two main education-related options, as they can be a bit confusing at first.

1/ First, regarding the free Microsoft 365 Education (Office 365 A1) plan: this isn’t something students can sign up for individually. It actually needs to be set up by your university’s IT administration. They would need to register their organization with Microsoft 365 Education, create a tenant, verify the school’s domain (for example, something like @yourschool.edu or similar), and enable services such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and OneDrive for students.

Once that setup is done, the school provides each student with a school-issued email account, and that’s the point where you can activate your access. So in short, students can only complete the final step using a school email. If your university hasn’t set this up yet, it unfortunately won’t be possible to use just a student ID to get the free Office 365 Education plan.

2/ Now, the second option is the Microsoft 365 Premium subscription with a student discount. This one is different because it’s an individual subscription, not managed by your school. Microsoft offers discounted pricing for eligible students. Typically, you would verify your student status using a school-provided email address, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be a “.edu” domain.

I’ve also noticed that on the official page, Microsoft mentions there can be an alternative verification method beyond using a school email:

Additionally, I came across a discussion that outlines this process. It highlights that you can select “Use another method” and then choose “I don’t have an academic email” during the sign-up flow. You may find it useful to take a look here: ms office for students - Microsoft Q&A

You can try selecting that and provide other student-related information for verification. Whether it’s accepted will depend on the details you submit and Microsoft’s verification process.

I hope my response provides helpful information, clarifies the difference between the two subscription options, and gives you a clearer direction on what you can try next.

If anything is still unclear or you need a hand along the way, please feel free to reply here. I’d be more than happy to continue supporting you.

Thank you so much for taking the time!

Student discounts and free offers depend on the specific Microsoft program and on whether the school is recognized as an eligible academic institution, not on having a “.edu” email address specifically.

Key points based on the available information:

    1. Microsoft 365 Education (free Microsoft 365 for students)
      • Eligibility is based on whether the school is part of the Microsoft 365 Education program.
      • Students typically sign up using a school-provided email address, but the domain does not have to be “.edu”.
      • If there is no school email or there is uncertainty about eligibility, the guidance is to contact the school’s IT or admin department so they can confirm eligibility or help set it up.
      • A student ID alone is not mentioned as sufficient for self-enrollment; the process is driven by the school’s participation and email-based verification.
    2. Academic eligibility for Microsoft 365 Education subscriptions (for institutions)
      • If a school does not qualify as a Microsoft Qualified Academic Institution, it cannot use the academic offers and must instead buy commercial offers from the Marketplace.
      • If there are questions about the school’s eligibility decision, the instruction is to contact support.
    3. Student discounts on Microsoft Certification exams
      • For certification exams (not Microsoft 365 subscriptions), students can receive academic pricing by:
        1. Signing in to the Learn profile.
        2. Completing the Interest Survey and selecting “Student” under Career Paths.
      • After academic status is verified in the certification profile, the student discount is applied at exam registration.
      • This process does not require a “.edu” domain specifically, but academic status must be verified through the Microsoft Learn profile.
    4. If the school is not eligible
      • When a school is not recognized as an eligible academic institution, academic offers (including Education discounts) are not available for that school.
      • In that case, only commercial offers are available; a student ID alone does not change this.

    Practical next steps:

    1. For Microsoft 365 Education access:
      • Check with the school’s IT or administration to confirm whether the institution participates in Microsoft 365 Education and what email address format is used for that.
      • If the school is not eligible, only commercial Microsoft 365 offers are available.
    2. For certification exam discounts:
      • Sign in to the Microsoft Learn profile and complete the Interest Survey, selecting “Student” as the career path to enable student pricing once academic status is verified.

A physical student ID by itself is not listed as a supported method to obtain Microsoft 365 Education or general student discounts; eligibility is determined by the school’s status and the official verification flows (school email and/or Microsoft’s academic verification system).
