Start your laptop, just as Windows attempts to load (spinning dots), press and hold Power Button for 5 - 10 seconds to perform a Hard Shut Down

    Do this twice

On the third start Windows will boot into the Recovery Environment and from there you can access System Repair, Safe Mode, Command Prompt... etc.

Please try each option one at a time, then see if Windows will successfully login.

    1

If there is an option to uninstall the latest update, that may be the best option.

    2

Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Option - Startup Repair

See if Windows startup can repair itself

    3

Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Option - System Restore

Check to see if you have a restore point you can go back to

Try these steps in order on the stuck laptop:

    1. Restart from the sign-in screen
      • On the sign-in screen, select the Power icon in the lower-right corner.
      • Select Restart.
      • If updates are pending, choose Update and restart so Windows can finish installing them.
    2. Force a full restart
      • If the device is frozen and won’t respond:
        • Press and hold the power button for about 20–30 seconds until the device turns off.
        • Wait a few seconds, then press the power button again to turn it back on.
    3. Try Safe Mode (if it still won’t pass the login screen)
      • On the sign-in screen, select the Power icon.
      • Hold down Shift on the keyboard and select Restart while still holding Shift.
      • After the PC restarts to the Choose an option screen, select:
        • Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
      • When the list of options appears, press 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
      • Sign in with the account password (PIN/biometrics are not available in Safe Mode).

If the device is a Surface and it’s stuck on the logo or a black screen instead of the normal login UI, also try:

    1. Force shutdown and restart (Surface)
      • Press and hold the power button for about 20 seconds until the device turns off and restarts, then release.
    2. Start from a USB recovery drive (Surface)
      • Shut down the Surface.
      • Insert a USB recovery drive.
      • Press and hold Volume down, then press and release Power.
      • Release Volume down when the Surface logo appears.

If none of these steps let the laptop get past the login screen, contact support or a service center for further diagnosis.
