Need access to dynamics for development

We have an application that works on contact data. One of our clients is a Microsoft Dynamics 365 user. The currently export data for us to work on and then import the results. We'd like to automate this process, but need a Dynamics platform that we can use for development and testing. Can someone help me understand what options are available? Do I need to buy a full installation? Do you have a developer edition?
