I am having problems with putting different footers on different pages, and I am having problems with page formatting and section and page breaks in MS Word - I can't delete erroneous section breaks on the wrong page and my page numbering is all wrong - I really would prefer to chat with someone about this!!!!!

The bot has given you a ton of stuff to try. The basic principle to creating different footers is that the footer must be unlinked from the footer in the previous section. Open the footer after the section break, then deselect Link to Previous.

If you are using Different first page and/or Different odd and even settings, you can have up to 3 different footers that must be unlinked from the previous section. Sometimes you must add temporary dummy pages to access every footer to unlink them.

Only use Section Breaks when they are absolutely necessary: to change page size, margins or orientation, to change headers and footers or to change the number of columns. To create a new page, just use a Page Break instead of a Section Break.

Below is a practical way to regain control of section breaks, headers/footers, and page numbers in Word on Windows.

    1. Show all hidden formatting (so the problems are visible)
    • On the Home tab, select Show/Hide (¶).
    • This will display Section Break (Next Page / Continuous / Odd / Even) and Page Break marks, plus paragraph marks.
    1. Identify and fix unwanted page breaks
    • Look for Page Break lines that are creating extra blank pages.
    • Click just before the Page Break and press Delete.
    • If a blank page is caused by a section break type (Next Page / Odd / Even):
      • Double-click the section break.
      • Go to Layout > Breaks and choose Continuous to keep the section but stop it from forcing a new page.
    1. Understand and manage section breaks
    • Section breaks control:
      • Page orientation (portrait/landscape)
      • Margins
      • Headers/footers (including page numbers)
    • To delete a section break completely:
      • Make sure Show/Hide (¶) is on.
      • Place the cursor just before the Section Break line and press Delete.
      • Warning: When a section break is deleted, Word merges the two sections and applies the formatting (including headers/footers) from the section that followed the break.
    1. Fix headers/footers on a single page (different footer on one page) If a single page needs a different footer (or no footer):
    2. Place the cursor at the start of that page.
    3. Go to Layout > Breaks > Next Page to insert a section break.
    4. Double-click in the footer on that page to open Header & Footer tools.
    5. On the Header & Footer tab, click Link to Previous to turn it off (so it no longer says “Same as Previous”).
    6. Now edit or remove the footer on this page:
      • To remove: choose Footer > Remove Footer.
      • To change: type the new footer content.
    7. If the change should apply only to this one page and not the following pages, insert another Next Page section break at the end of the page and again turn Link to Previous off in the next section’s footer, then restore the original footer there.
    8. Fix “Different First Page” issues (missing page numbers) If some pages show “First Page Footer – Section X” and have no page number:
    9. Go to a page where the number is missing.
    10. Double-click the header or footer area.
    11. On the Header & Footer tab, check if Different First Page is turned on.
      • If that page is not supposed to have a special first-page footer, uncheck Different First Page.
    12. If the header/footer label shows “First Page Footer – Section X” on multiple pages, it means each of those pages is the first page of a section, and the “Different First Page” setting is hiding the page number in each section. Turn off Different First Page in those sections where a special first page is not needed.
    13. Make page numbers continuous across sections If numbering restarts or shows “Page 1” in the middle of the document:
    14. Go to a page where the numbering is wrong.
    15. Double-click the footer (or header) that contains the page number.
    16. On the Header & Footer tab, click Page Number > Format Page Numbers.
    17. In the dialog:
      • Under Page numbering, select Continue from previous section if numbering should be continuous.
      • Only use Start at: when a section truly needs a new starting number (for example, front matter with Roman numerals).
    18. Repeat for other sections where numbering is incorrect.
    19. Customize page number formats for different sections (optional) If different parts of the document need different numbering styles (for example, Roman numerals in the intro and Arabic in the body):
    20. Insert a Next Page section break between the parts.
    21. In the new section’s header/footer, ensure Link to Previous is off.
    22. Click Page Number > Page Number to insert a number if needed.
    23. Click Page Number > Format Page Numbers:
      • Choose a Number format (e.g., i, ii, iii or 1, 2, 3).
      • Under Page numbering, choose Start at and set the starting value.
    24. Delete a blank last page caused by a section break If the last page is blank but won’t delete:
    25. Turn on Show/Hide (¶).
    26. If there is a Section Break (Next Page) at the end:
      • Place the cursor just before the section break and press Delete.
      • If that changes formatting you still need, instead change that break to Continuous (see step 2).

These steps give a repeatable way to:

    • See and remove wrong page/section breaks.
    • Control which pages share or do not share headers/footers.
    • Restore correct, continuous page numbering across sections.
