Which specific product are you trying to install and activate? Typically, if you received a product key, you enter it at https://setup.office.com and then proceed with the install via your selected Microsoft account.

Follow these steps to resolve the activation problem:

    1. Verify that the product key is correct and valid
      • Make sure the key is specifically for the Office version being installed; keys from other Microsoft products (for example, Windows) or other Office versions (for example, Office 2010 vs. 2016/2019/2021/2024) will not work.
      • Ensure the key is for the correct product type (suite vs. single app, retail vs. volume). A key from an individual program (for example, Word only) cannot activate a full Office suite, and volume license keys cannot be used with retail consumer installs.
      • Double‑check for common typing mistakes (B vs 8, G vs 6, O vs 0, Q vs 0, VV vs W). If the key came by email, copy and paste it instead of typing.
    2. If activation reports “product key is not valid” or similar
      • This indicates the key has been blocked and will no longer work.
      • In that case, contact the seller and request a refund. Keys sold separately from the software are often stolen or fraudulently obtained and then blocked.
    3. Try internet activation again after correcting the key
      • Start any Office app (such as Word).
      • When prompted, enter the correct product key.
      • Choose activation over the internet and complete the wizard.
    4. Use telephone activation correctly (for perpetual/one‑time purchase Office)
    5. If activation still fails on a modern Office version (2016 or later)
      • Run the Microsoft 365/Office activation troubleshooter on the same Windows PC where Office is installed (Windows 10 or later), using the “Start” button in the troubleshooter article.
      • Follow the prompts to detect and fix activation issues.
    6. If the product key has been used too many times or is a volume/MAK key
      • For older perpetual products (for example, Office 2007/2010), if the key has reached its installation limit, use telephone activation and stay on the line until speaking with a human agent to explain the situation.
      • If the key is actually a volume (MAK) key sold by a third party for home use, it is not a valid consumer license and may no longer be usable; in that case, request a refund from the seller and obtain a genuine retail or Microsoft 365 license.
    7. If using Microsoft 365 (subscription)
      • Ensure sign‑in with the same Microsoft account that was used to purchase or redeem the subscription. If the wrong account is used, Office will show as unlicensed.
