Hi,

I am trying to activate my M365 dev subscription, but when I need to enter the information for a billing account, I get a time-out. I've cleared cookies/browsing data, tried different browsers, but this not help. How can I resolve this?

    Dear @Duncan Bruns,

Good day, and thank you for reaching out to the Q&A Forum. I understand that you are receiving a time-out when trying to add a billing account to your Microsoft 365 Developer subscription. I’m sorry for the inconvenience this has caused. As a forum moderator, I genuinely wish I could directly access your account or delve into the backend systems to diagnose and fix this for you. However, our role here is limited to providing general guidance and solutions that can be applied by users. Just to double-check, have you tried the following steps:

Use a mobile hotspot or a different network

Network-related time-outs can sometimes occur due to firewall, proxy, DNS, or ISP-related restrictions. If possible, please try switching to your phone’s mobile hotspot or another network, then attempt the activation process again.

    Try again later

Sometimes Microsoft’s provisioning backend is temporarily overloaded. Wait 30-60 minutes and try again.

I also recommend checking the answer provided by AI above, as it may contain additional useful suggestions related to your scenario.

If the issue persists after trying the above steps, I recommend that you create a service request with Microsoft Support. A technical support engineer can perform a remote session to investigate the situation, verify the backend configurations, and run any necessary synchronization tools to resolve the problem. If the issue requires further attention, they can escalate it to a specialized team for deeper analysis. For detailed instructions on how to get support, please refer to Get support - Microsoft 365 admin.

For additional assistance, use this link to find the appropriate contact number from your region: Global Customer Service phone numbers - Microsoft Support

I hope this information is helpful and provides you with workable solutions. Should you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out. I'm always happy to help. Have a wonderful day!

Follow these steps to work around the timeout when adding billing information and to get the billing account unblocked if needed:

    1. Try a private/incognito browser session
      • Open an InPrivate/Incognito window instead of a normal tab.
      • In Edge: Settings (three dots) > New InPrivate window.
      • In Chrome: use Incognito mode.
      • Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin or billing portal from that private window and try adding the billing account again.
    2. Ensure cookies (including third‑party) are allowed
      • Timeouts and “something failed” behaviors can be caused by blocked cookies.
      • In Edge: Settings > View advanced settings > Cookies > set to Don’t block cookies.
      • In Chrome: Settings > Privacy and Security > Content settings, and make sure third‑party cookies are not blocked.
      • Then retry the billing account setup.
    3. Check for a blocked billing account
      • If the billing account is blocked, adding new subscriptions or transferring subscriptions is prevented.
      • In that case, the only resolution is to contact support so the billing account can be unblocked and returned to an active state.
    4. Contact Microsoft support if the timeout persists
      • If private browsing and cookie changes do not resolve the issue, and the billing account might be blocked, contact support:
        • If the subscription was bought directly from Microsoft, use the Microsoft 365 admin support channel to open a billing/support ticket.
        • If working through a partner or enterprise agreement, contact the partner or account manager.

Once the billing account is active and the browser/cookie issues are resolved, the M365 developer subscription activation should complete without timing out when entering billing details.
