Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Hi @Amrutha Kondeti,
Thank you for reaching out regarding the issue you are experiencing while setting up your YubiKey.
Before we proceed, please note that this is a user-to-user community forum. As a moderator, I don’t have access to your Microsoft 365 tenant, your account, or your device to make changes directly. However, I’ll do my best to support you by sharing the appropriate resources and directing you to the right support channels.
Based on the error message shown (“We couldn't verify your identity or you are using private mode”), this typically occurs when the system is unable to complete the identity verification process during the security key registration. Although the message references private browsing, the root cause is often related to browser settings, session restrictions, or organizational security policies.
To successfully register and use a YubiKey, please ensure the following prerequisites are met:
- Microsoft Entra MFA is required to complete registration and authentication
- The YubiKey must be a supported FIDO2 security key and eligible for attestation with Microsoft Entra ID
- Supported devices and OS versions:
- Windows 10 version 1903 or later (Entra joined)
- Windows 10 version 2004 or later (Hybrid joined)
- Supported platforms: Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS
For more details, please refer to Microsoft documentation: Passkey (FIDO2) authentication matrix with Microsoft Entra ID - Microsoft Entra ID | Microsoft Learn
In the meantime, you can try the following steps to resolve the issue:
- Use a supported browser and session
- Use the latest version of Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome
- Ensure you are not using private/incognito mode
- Temporarily disable browser extensions
- Check browser settings
- Enable cookies (including third-party cookies)
- Ensure JavaScript is enabled
- Start a clean session
- Sign out of all Microsoft accounts
- Open a new browser window
- Go to: https://aka.ms/mysecurityinfo
- Attempt the registration again
- Try another device or port
- Use a different computer if available
- Try another USB port
If the issue continues after performing the steps above, it may be related to tenant configuration (e.g., Conditional Access or FIDO2 policy settings).
Please raise a support ticket and include the following details:
- User account (UPN/email)
- YubiKey model
- Browser and version
- Operating system version
