I'm trying to set up authenticator to log in to my microsoft outlook 365 account but I cannot log into my security settings unless I have authenticator as a 2FA. How do I bypass the security settings so I can log in and change my security settings?

For an Outlook/Microsoft 365 account that is already protected by two-factor authentication and is asking for Microsoft Authenticator to access security settings, there is no way to “bypass” security. Instead, use an alternative verification method or have an admin reset MFA, depending on the type of account.

    1. If this is a personal Microsoft account (Outlook.com, Hotmail, etc.)
    • Try to sign in at the normal Microsoft sign-in page.
    • When prompted for the second factor, look for options such as SMS text, alternate email, or “I don’t have any of these.”
    • If an alternate method (phone, email) is available, use it to verify, then go to the security settings page and update your security info:
      • Go to the Security basics page, then Advanced security options > Get started.
      • Add a new phone number, email, or app method.
      • After verifying the new method, remove any old or incorrect methods.
    • If all codes are going to an email/phone you no longer control and there is no usable alternative method, use the “I don’t have any of these” option and follow the prompts to replace security information. The account may be put into a restricted state for up to 30 days while new security info is validated.
    1. If this is a work or school (Microsoft 365 business/education) account
    • If there is any alternative sign-in method configured (SMS, phone call, other app), use that to complete sign-in and then:
      • Have a global admin open Microsoft Entra admin center, go to Users > All users, select the user, open Authentication methods, and choose Require re-register multifactor authentication so MFA can be set up again.
    • If Authenticator is the only method and it is no longer accessible, contact the organization’s Microsoft 365/Entra administrator and ask them to reset MFA as above.
    • If locked out and also the only admin on the tenant, contact Microsoft Support by phone and request escalation to the Microsoft Data Protection team, who can verify identity and help regain access to the admin account.

There is no supported way to skip or disable MFA from the sign-in page without successfully proving identity through one of the configured verification methods or having an administrator (or Microsoft Support, for single-admin tenants) reset the MFA configuration.
