Why do all the apps tell me that I need to activate the account to be able to create or edit and when I click on Activate I get a message telling me that my account is Read only?

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

This usually happens when Microsoft 365 cannot verify the license assigned to your account, or when the account you're signed into has limited access.

To help narrow down the issue:

    1. Are you using a personal Microsoft account or a work/school account?
    2. Did Office work before, or is this a new installation?
    3. If you open Word and go to File > Account, what does it show under Product Information?
    4. Do you see any error codes along with the "Read only" message?

In the meantime, try signing out of Office completely, then sign back in with the account that owns the Microsoft 365 subscription or Office license.

If this is a work or school account, it's also possible that your organization's administrator has restricted access or removed the license assigned to your account.

If issue still persists please provide more details about the issue by answering my questions. Thanks!

The apps are in read-only mode because the account currently signed in to Office either has no valid license for the desktop apps, or Office cannot verify that license. When that happens, Word, Excel, and other apps let documents be opened but block creating or editing until activation succeeds.

To fix this, follow these steps on Windows:

    1. Confirm the correct account and license
      • Open any Office app (for example, Word) and go to File > Account.
      • Under User Information, check which email address is signed in.
      • Make sure this is the Work or School account or personal Microsoft account that actually has an active Microsoft 365 or Office license. If it is a basic plan like Microsoft 365 Basic, note that this does not include the right to install desktop apps; in that case the apps will stay read-only.
    2. Sign out of Office and sign back in
      • In the same File > Account page, select the name/profile at the top and choose Sign out.
      • Close all Office apps.
      • Reopen Word, select Sign in, and sign in with the account that owns the valid Microsoft 365 or Office license.
      • Try activation again.
    3. Remove old or wrong account credentials
      • Open Control Panel > Credential Manager > Windows Credentials.
      • Remove any entries for MicrosoftOffice16 or entries tied to old or unused work/school accounts.
      • Go to Settings > Accounts > Access work or school and disconnect any old work/school account that should no longer be used with Office.
      • Restart the device and then start Word and sign in with the correct licensed account.
    4. Reset the Office activation state (if still stuck)
      • Use the documented procedure to Reset activation state for Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise, then start an Office app and sign in again to trigger a fresh activation.

If the signed-in account truly has no qualifying license (for example, only a storage plan or an expired subscription), a valid Microsoft 365 Personal/Family or perpetual Office license is required; otherwise the apps will remain in unlicensed/read-only mode.
