Not sure if I am just missing a trick here but i cant figure our t how to label my photo using the caption tab within==out it having a number. For example, I am trying to label a photo North and it will name it 'North 1' and i cant delete the 1. i think there should be an option to just label it North with out it having to abide to the number/letter system.

As others have said, you don't have to use the Caption dialog. You can add a text box to a wrapped figure or just add a paragraph below an inline figure. If you want the caption to show up in a Table of Figures, List of Tables, etc., format it with the Caption style. Or you can use any other unique style, then create a Table of Figures based on that style.

Word's built-in Caption facility always adds a number. You can delete that number (which is in fact a SEQ field) if you wish. After the Caption dialog box has added the number, just select and delete the it in the text paragraph to which it has been added. What remains is the caption label and any text you have added yourself.

Alternatively, you can manually add a text box (if appropriate), as already suggested by Velivela Varshitha.

Word's built-in Caption feature always includes an automatically generated number with the label (for example, Figure 1 or Table 1). The number is part of the caption field and cannot be removed while continuing to use the automatic captioning mechanism.

To label a photo with only "North" (without a number), you have two practical options:

Option 1: Do not use Insert Caption (recommended)

    1. Insert the picture.

Go to Insert > Text Box and draw a text box below or beside the picture.

Type North in the text box and format it as desired.

Select both the picture and the text box.

Choose Picture Format > Arrange > Group > Group so they move together.

Option 2: Use Insert Caption, then convert it to plain text

Insert the caption normally (for example, Figure 1 North).

Select the caption and press Ctrl + Shift + F9 to convert the field to plain text.

Delete the number, leaving only North.

Note: After converting the caption to plain text, it will no longer update automatically if other captions are added or renumbered.

If you do not need automatic caption numbering, the first method (text box + grouping) is the simplest and most flexible solution. Word's built‑in caption feature always includes an automatically generated number with the label (for example, "Figure 1", "Table 1"). That number is part of the caption field and cannot be removed while still using the caption mechanism.

To have a photo labeled only "North" without a number, there are two practical options:

    1. Do not use Insert Caption
      • Insert the picture.
      • Use Insert > Text Box to draw a text box near or under the photo.
      • Type North in the text box and format it as desired.
      • Select both the picture and the text box and use Picture Format > Arrange > Group > Group so they move together.
    2. Use Insert Caption, then convert to plain text (not recommended if you need automatic numbering elsewhere)
      • Insert the caption as usual (for example, it becomes Figure 1 North).
      • Select the caption and press Ctrl+Shift+F9 to convert the field to plain text.
      • Manually delete the number and leave only North.
      • Note: After converting to text, that caption will no longer update automatically with other captions.

If consistent automatic numbering is not required for these photo labels, the first method (text box + grouping) is the simplest.
