I have Outlook 16.109.3 on Mac. My Outlook database underwent an incomplete migration and created a file called [PII: Removed] (41MB,PII: Removed) in my Main Profile folder. My subfolder emails (travel, insurance etc) are missing and I believe they are stuck in this file. I need help extracting the data from [PII: Removed]. The database integrity check passes (returns 'ok') but Outlook shows 'couldn't repair database'.

    Hi Louise Steen

I understand that your Outlook for Mac migration did not complete, and that your subfolder emails are missing after a file named HxStoreMigrating.hxd appeared in the Main Profile folder.

Please reply with the following details:

    • Whether the missing folders appear in webmail
    • Whether the account is Outlook.com/Hotmail, Gmail, IMAP/POP, or another provider
    • Whether you have an .olm export or a Time Machine backup from before the migration
    • Whether the messages were stored under On My Computer or under synced mail folders

I would love to hear from you soon. Have a nice day!

Outlook 2016 for Mac does not provide any supported way to open or extract data directly from internal database files such as HxStoreMigrating.hxd. Database repair and migration are handled entirely by Outlook’s built‑in database engine.

    For Outlook 2016 for Mac:

    1. Manual database rebuild is no longer available. Office 2016 for Mac automatically repairs and rebuilds the Office database when corruption or migration issues occur. If a larger database issue is detected, Outlook prompts to repair and guides through restarting Outlook, rebuilding the database, and loading the rebuilt database.
    2. If the database integrity check reports OK but Outlook still shows “couldn't repair database,” the supported options are:
      • Allow Outlook to complete its automatic recovery/rebuild when prompted.
      • If problems persist, use the in‑product support channel: in Outlook, select Help > Contact Support to open a support case so that Microsoft Support can review the profile and database state.
    3. There is no documented or supported mechanism to extract messages from HxStoreMigrating.hxd or to mount that file as a separate store. Recovery must go through Outlook’s own database repair/rebuild process.

If search or folder visibility issues are suspected rather than database corruption, verify that macOS Spotlight indexing is healthy, as search issues are typically due to Spotlight rather than the Outlook database.
