A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
The symptoms match two separate but related issues: subscription/account warnings and AutoSave/"Couldn't save automatically" errors. A support agent is required to check the account and subscription status directly.
Steps to take:
- Verify subscription and payment status
- Close all Office apps.
- Go to the Microsoft account Subscriptions page: https://account.microsoft.com/services
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account used in Word.
- Under the Microsoft 365 heading, confirm the subscription is shown as active, not expired or suspended.
- If it shows expired or suspended, follow the renewal steps in the subscription page to reactivate it.
- Confirm payment method is valid
- Go to the Payment options page: https://account.microsoft.com/billing/payments
- Sign in with the same account.
- If the payment method shows any error, update the card details or add a new payment method.
- After updating, close and reopen Word and check if the subscription warning disappears.
- Check AutoSave and storage behavior
- AutoSave only works with an active Microsoft 365 subscription and when files are stored in OneDrive or SharePoint.
- If a file was deleted or access removed while it was open, Word can show errors like "Upload failed" or "Couldn't save automatically" and force "Save a copy". In that case:
- Use Save a copy to avoid losing work.
- If the original file was deleted by mistake, restore it from the OneDrive or SharePoint recycle bin as described in the OneDrive/SharePoint restore guidance.
- Contact a person at Microsoft Support
- For direct help from a support professional (phone, chat, or email):
- Go to the Microsoft Office Support home page.
- Scroll to the bottom and choose one of the Contact or Support options (phone, chat, or email) to reach a support agent who can:
- Check the Microsoft 365 subscription status.
- Confirm billing and payment history.
- Verify OneDrive storage and resolve the AutoSave/"Save a copy" behavior.
- For direct help from a support professional (phone, chat, or email):
If the subscription is confirmed active, payment is valid, and OneDrive storage is not full, a support agent can investigate account-side issues such as licensing glitches or storage quota problems that cause Word to stop autosaving and require "Save a copy".
