Copilot Projects won't let me upload files.

Allow me to get some details out of the way first. I am on a:

  • Windows 11 Home OS
  • Personal Microsoft account
  • MS365 Premium subscription

I am using the Windows Desktop Copilot App.

Those contextual details out of the way, all of a sudden, Copilot won't accept any .docx uploads to the Sources folder of my Project. I even created a new document called test.docx that contained a single word: 'test'. This was after doing everything from force-closing Copilot in Task Manager to attempting to update Copilot, to converting the text of a more complex document to both RTF and Notepad text to try to clear up any underlying metadata issues. Nothing. It simply will not accept any upload, regardless of size, complexity, or file type.

    Hi Brian Wallace Jr,

I understand how frustrating this must be, especially since you already tested with a very simple test.docx file and also tried other formats.

To help narrow this down, could you please confirm a few details?

    • Do you see any specific error message when the upload fails, or does the file simply not attach/add to the Sources folder?
    • Does the same issue happen if you try Copilot from the web browser instead of the Windows desktop Copilot app?
    • Are the files stored locally only, or are they saved/synced in OneDrive?
    • Does this happen only inside Copilot Projects, or also when uploading a file in a normal Copilot chat?
    • Are you signed in with only one Microsoft account in Copilot/Windows, or are there multiple personal/work accounts signed in on the device?

In the meantime, please try the following:

    • Test from Copilot on the web using the same Microsoft account.
    • Save the test file to OneDrive, make sure it finishes syncing, then try uploading it again from that OneDrive location.
    • Sign out of Copilot completely, close the app, then reopen it and sign back in with the Microsoft account that has the Microsoft 365 Premium subscription.
    • Repair or reset the Copilot app from Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Copilot > Advanced options, then test again.
    • Try uploading a supported small file in a normal Copilot chat, such as a small DOCX, PDF, or TXT file, to check whether file upload works outside Projects.

While my initial response may not fully resolve the issue, I truly appreciate your cooperation as we work together toward identifying the most effective solution. Thank you so much for your understanding.
