A Microsoft file hosting and synchronization service.
Hi @Karen Copley,
Thank you for reaching out, and I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused.
I understand how disruptive it is when saving and opening files works only intermittently, particularly when it interrupts your work. The issue is typically caused by OneDrive not running properly in the background, storage nearing its limit, a corrupted Office document cache, or a sync connection that requires refreshing.
To resolve the issue, please follow these steps:
- Make sure OneDrive is running
If OneDrive isn't active in the background, Windows 11 can't open or save your files directly from the cloud, which is often why it only works while you are already inside Word.
- Select the Start button, type OneDrive in the search box, and open it.
- Select the OneDrive desktop app and sign in if prompted.
Once it is running, look at the blue cloud icon in your taskbar and clear any errors shown in the pop up window.
- Check that your OneDrive storage is healthy
If your OneDrive is full or nearly full, you won't be able to upload, edit, or sync new files, which can make saving fail and opening behave unpredictably.
- Select the blue OneDrive cloud icon in your taskbar, then choose Settings (the gear icon) and select Manage storage to see how much space is used.
- If you are close to the limit, free up space by removing large or unneeded files, or empty your OneDrive recycle bin.
- Repair the Office installation
- Close all Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
- Open Windows Settings (press Windows + I).
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 / Microsoft Office in the list.
- Select the three dots (…) next to it and choose Modify.
- If prompted by User Account Control, select Yes.
- Choose Online Repair > then select Repair.
- Follow the on‑screen instructions until it completes.
- Reset the OneDrive sync client
- Press Windows + R.
- Paste the following command and press Enter:
%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset
- If Windows says it cannot find the file, try this instead:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset
- If that also does not work, try:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset
After the reset, manually start OneDrive again from the Start menu.
I hope this information is helpful. Please follow the steps above and let me know if it works for you. If not, we can continue working together to resolve the issue.
