Unable to log in to portal.azure.com with *@outlook.com account - Authenticator no longer provides code

For some reason the authenticator app is no longer providing me with a code when attempting to log in to portal.azure.com with my @outlook.com account. I can log in to outlook just fine, and access my security settings. Attempting to use other MFA mechanisms only allows for a 6 digit code, but my outlook.com entry in Authenticator only has an 8 digit code.

How can we fix this? It's a personal outlook.com account, and I'm the only user on the Azure Portal, so there is no admin available that can access. I am the admin.

    Hello @Yngve Bakken Nilsen,

Based on the information you shared, I understand that you are having an issue related to your Microsoft Authenticator app and you are unable to login to Azure portal using personal account.

If you are the only user, you will need to contact the Microsoft Support Data Protection team to have your MFA reset. Please locate the appropriate Microsoft support hotline and contact the frontline support team so they can raise a ticket on your behalf: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support

Please note that this is a user-to-user support forum. Only Data Protection team can help you to revoke the session and reset your password, account, MFA...

Feel free to let me know if there are any updates or if you have further questions regarding this issue.

For a personal @outlook.com account where Microsoft Authenticator is no longer giving a usable code for Azure sign‑in and there is no separate tenant admin, the supported path is to reset the MFA registration for that account via an admin context where the account is a guest, or to work with Microsoft support/Data Protection to have MFA reset.

From the provided material, the working pattern in similar cases is:

    1. Ensure the account can still sign in to Outlook and the Microsoft account security pages (which is already the case).
    2. If the personal account is a guest in an Azure AD/Microsoft Entra tenant that you control, sign in to that tenant with another Global Administrator account and force re‑registration of MFA for the affected user:
      1. Sign in to the Microsoft Entra admin center with a Global Administrator account for the tenant.
      2. Go to Identity > Users > All users.
      3. Select the affected @outlook.com user.
      4. Open Authentication methods.
      5. Select Require re‑register MFA.
      6. Next time the affected account signs in, it will be prompted to set up MFA again (and can then register a working method in Authenticator).
This is the same approach used to fix a stuck personal Azure MFA profile when the account is a guest in a tenant.
    3. If there is no other Global Administrator available and the account is effectively locked behind MFA, the next step is to work with Microsoft support/Data Protection so they can reset MFA after verifying identity. The documented pattern is:
      1. Call Microsoft’s customer service using the regional number listed under Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support.
      2. When prompted by the IVR, clearly indicate that this is an Authenticator / MFA problem for a business/tenant scenario and that there is no other admin.
      3. Ask the agent to create a service request and route it to the Data Protection team to reset the MFA settings for the affected account.
      4. Follow their identity‑verification process; once complete, they can clear the MFA configuration so the next sign‑in will allow registering Authenticator again.
    4. As an alternative escalation path when it is difficult to reach the right support team, it is possible to:
      1. Create a new trial Microsoft 365 tenant.
      2. Use that tenant’s admin center to open a support ticket explicitly requesting Data Protection assistance for the original tenant/account that is locked behind MFA.

There is no self‑service way, from the personal Microsoft account side alone, to clear a stuck Azure MFA profile for a personal @outlook.com account used as an Azure admin; it must be reset from the tenant side (Require re‑register MFA) or by Microsoft’s Data Protection/support teams after verification.
