A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data.
Follow these steps in order until Word and Excel open normally.
- Try the built-in repair prompt
When the message appears (“has run into an error… Would you like us to repair now?”), choose Repair now once and let it complete. If the apps still do not open, continue with the steps below. - Run an Online Repair of Office
This is the most effective fix when all Office apps fail to start.- Close all Office apps (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
- Open Settings in Windows.
- Go to Apps → Installed apps (or Apps & features on some versions).
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office in the list.
- Select it → choose Modify.
- Select Online Repair and confirm. Let it run to completion (this can take 15–30 minutes).
- Restart the PC after the repair finishes.
- Open Word or Excel again and test.
- If Online Repair does not fix it: fully reinstall Office
- Uninstall Office from Settings → Apps → Installed apps (or Programs and Features in Control Panel).
- Restart the computer (use Restart, not Shut down).
- Reinstall Office from the Microsoft account or installation source used originally.
- After installation, open Word and Excel to confirm they start correctly.
If the error persists even after a full reinstall, check for problematic add-ins by starting Word/Excel in Safe Mode (for example, run winword /safe or excel /safe from the Run dialog) and disabling add-ins, or investigate system components such as Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime if all Office apps crash immediately on startup.
