    Hello,

Actually no, the upgrade path has been closed since Setp 2023, unless you have Windows 10 license.

Yes, you can upgrade/install Windows 10 without buying a license upfront, but that does not mean you’ll have a properly activated/licensed copy.

The old “free upgrade” from Windows 7 to Windows 10 is effectively over. For years, many Windows 7 keys still activated Windows 10, but Microsoft has since closed that path for new activations.

So it depends on your situation:

If that PC was already upgraded to Windows 10 before: You probably have a digital license tied to that hardware. In that case, reinstalling or upgrading to Windows 10 should usually activate automatically once online.

If the PC has only ever had Windows 7: You can install Windows 10 and skip the product key during setup, but it will likely remain unactivated unless you buy/use a valid Windows 10 license.

If you run Windows 10 unactivated: It will still boot and work, but you’ll get activation reminders, a watermark, and some personalization features will be locked. It’s not the same as being properly licensed.

Also worth noting: Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, so from a security/support standpoint, Windows 11 or another supported OS may be the better long-term move.

Bottom line: You can install it without purchasing a license immediately, but if the machine does not already have a Windows 10 digital license, you should expect to need a valid license to activate it legally.
