AI-102 Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Engineer Associate

Question

I'm am interested in obtaining the certification AI-102 Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Engineer Associate. However, I am new to AI. I am a network engineer for 15 plus years with no coding or programing experience. I just started the process of learning Python to help me in this new journey. My question is, to become an AI engineer, am I on the right or best path or am I skipping/missing something to help in my journey to become an AI engineer?

Given that profile, the path can be structured as follows:

1. Programming fundamentals (in progress)
   • Continuing with Python is appropriate because the exam and role explicitly list Python as a primary language.
   • Aim for comfort with: variables, functions, classes, error handling, working with JSON, and calling REST APIs.
2. Azure and cloud foundations
   • Before deep AI work, build a solid understanding of Azure basics: resource groups, identity and access, networking, and storage. This aligns well with existing network engineering experience and will help when deploying and securing AI solutions.
3. AI-102-specific skills
   • Focus on the skills measured for Exam AI-102:
     • Plan and manage an Azure AI solution.
     • Implement generative AI solutions using Azure OpenAI and related services.
     • Implement agentic solutions.
     • Implement computer vision, natural language processing, speech, knowledge mining, and information extraction using Azure AI services.
   • Use the official study guide and study resources to structure preparation, including self-paced learning paths and documentation for Azure AI services, Azure AI Vision, Azure AI Language, Azure AI Speech, Azure AI Search, Azure OpenAI, and Azure AI Document Intelligence.
4. Structured training for AI-102
   • The official course AI-102T00: Develop AI solutions in Azure is designed for software engineers building AI-infused applications with Azure AI Foundry and other Azure AI services, using C# or Python and REST APIs/SDKs. Once comfortable with basic Python and Azure fundamentals, this course is a direct preparation route for the certification.
5. Hands-on practice
   • Reinforce learning by building small end-to-end solutions: for example, a simple web or console app that calls Azure AI services for text analysis, image analysis, or a generative AI use case, then deploys it on Azure.

This means nothing critical is being skipped; the key additions are:

• Strengthening general Azure/cloud fundamentals alongside Python.
• Following the AI-102 exam’s skill outline and using the official AI-102 course and study resources to guide learning.
