Copilot missing images and unable to render new images

Yesterday I noticed that nearly all of my threads except really current ones had stopped loading images created and now just have the camera icon instead of previously created images.I have a Microsoft personal account and use the Copilot Windows app (taskbar) and the iPad Copilot. Neither version or the web version have the images anymore. I tried logging out of all versions, creating new threads, but nothing makes the images reappear. Today Copilot has stopped being able to make re renders of new images or create images from a reference image (something it had no problems generating before today). When I ask for an edit or try to create an image from a reference I get "I can absolutely help you once the system allows image editing again, but right now I’m blocked from generating or modifying images because the art‑generation system is still unavailable."

    Hi Abi Robinson,

I understand how frustrating this must be, especially when previously generated images are no longer loading and image editing/generation was working normally before.

At this point, I recommend that you review and try the steps provided in the AI generated answer on your thread. That reply typically include the most relevant checks for this scenario.

In the meantime, you can try these quick checks:

    • Open Copilot from the web and test with a very simple text-only prompt.
    • Try an InPrivate/private browser window with the same Microsoft account.
    • Make sure no VPN, proxy, ad blocker, or privacy extension is interfering with Copilot on the web.
    • If the issue still appears on all platforms, use the feedback option in Copilot and include the exact error message, the time the issue started, your account type, and that it happens on Windows, iPad, and web.

Please note that this is a user-to-user support forum. Moderators and contributors, including external Microsoft employees, cannot directly check or restore Copilot backend services or account-specific image storage from here. If the images were not downloaded before and they no longer render in Copilot, there may not be a forum-side way to recover them directly.

I know this is not the result you were hoping for but given that the same issue happens across multiple platforms, reporting it through Copilot feedback is the best way to get the issue and related logs to the product team for review. Thank you so much for your understanding.

The behavior matches a temporary outage or restriction of the Copilot image‑generation and image‑editing system rather than an issue with the local apps or account.

    Key points from the scenario:

    • Previously generated images in existing threads now show only a camera icon across Windows, iPad, and web.
    • New image edits and reference‑based generations fail with a message that the art‑generation system is unavailable.
    • Logging out and creating new threads does not change the behavior.

    From the available information:

    • Images created with Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Chat are stored and surfaced through Copilot’s image services and, for Microsoft 365 Copilot, can be accessed centrally in Copilot Library. When the underlying image system is unavailable, both:
      • New image generation/editing, and
      • Retrieval/rendering of previously generated images can be affected across all clients.
    • Image features are also subject to policy and service limits. If image creation or editing is disabled at the service level (for example, via policy or a temporary service restriction), the UI can still show prior prompts/threads while images fail to render or be created.
    • There are explicit limitations and enforcement around image upload/editing; attempts to upload or work with images that violate the Microsoft Services Agreement or Copilot Terms of Use can lead to restrictions on Copilot usage, including image features.

Given the message “the art‑generation system is still unavailable,” the next steps are:

    1. Wait and retry periodically
      • Because the message indicates a backend system unavailability, the first action is to wait and test again later from one client (for example, the web experience) using a simple text‑only image prompt.
    2. Verify that image features are generally available
      • For Microsoft 365 Copilot scenarios, confirm that image creation/editing is enabled and visible where expected (for example, via the Microsoft 365 Copilot app’s image features or Copilot Library if applicable). If Copilot Library is empty or image tabs are missing, image creation may be disabled by policy.
    3. Ensure uploaded images comply with usage rules
      • When the service becomes available again, only upload and edit images that are original or that there are rights to use, and that do not violate privacy or other restrictions. Violations can result in restrictions or suspension of Copilot usage for images.
    4. If the issue persists for an extended period
      • If the same error continues well beyond a normal outage window and across all devices, contact Microsoft support from the account’s support channel and provide:
        • The exact error text about the art‑generation system being unavailable.
        • Confirmation that it occurs on Windows app, iPad app, and web.
        • An approximate date/time when images stopped rendering and when edits stopped working.

Until the art‑generation system is restored or any account‑specific restriction is cleared, image generation and editing (including re‑renders and reference‑based images) will remain blocked, and existing images may continue to appear as placeholders rather than fully rendered images.
