1. Check that Windows Hello is configured and updated

   • Install all pending Windows and driver updates, then restart the PC. On Surface devices, use the Surface app → Help & support → Check for updates and install any driver/firmware updates, then try Hello again.
2. Re‑enroll the biometric sign-in

   • Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
   • Under Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello), choose Remove, then Set up and follow the wizard. When enrolling, place the finger in the center of the sensor with light pressure and slightly change position so multiple angles are captured.

3. If biometric authentication still does not work (Enhanced Sign-in Security)
   For devices using Enhanced Sign-in Security:

   • In System Information > Software Environment > Running Tasks, confirm bioiso.exe and ngciso.exe are running. If not, the device may not meet Enhanced Sign-in Security requirements.
   • In Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options, remove the non-functioning face/fingerprint enrollment and re-enroll. If the entry shows a message like We couldn't find a fingerprint scanner compatible with Windows Hello, continue with the next step.
4. Reinstall the biometric drivers
   • Open Device Manager.
   • Expand Biometric devices.
   • Right‑click the face or fingerprint sensor → Uninstall device.
   • Restart the PC so Windows reinstalls the driver automatically.
   • Return to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and check if face/fingerprint can now be set up.
5. Restart the Windows Biometric Service (advanced)
   • In Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options, remove the PIN.
   • Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
     net stop wbiosrvc && net start wbiosrvc

   • Submit feedback via Feedback Hub describing the issue and device model so it can be investigated.

For temporary lockouts after many failed biometric attempts, sign in once using PIN or password; this is required to make biometric sign-in available again.
