Upgrading AD Windows Server 2012 R2 to 2019

Hello everyone,

At my company we're planning to upgrade our AD Windows Server from 2012 R2 to 2016 or 2019

The main question is:

Is there a way to know which services (we have several services hosted on Linux and/or Windows) validate against our Active Directory?

That way in the process of migration, we can know if a service won't run/validate against the 2016 or 2019

If you need any more details, please let me know.

Thanks!!

Not sure what you're asking about the services?

The two prerequisites to introducing the first 2019 domain controller are that domain functional level needs to be 2008 or higher and older sysvol FRS replication needs to have been migrated to DFSR

I'd use dcdiag / repadmin tools to verify health correcting all errors found before starting any operations. Then stand up the new 2019, patch it fully, license it, join existing domain, add active directory domain services, promote it also making it a GC (recommended), transfer FSMO roles over (optional), transfer pdc emulator role (optional), use dcdiag / repadmin tools to again verify health, when all is good you can decommission / demote old one.

For services i'm referring to -for example-: we have an administrative application (billing purposes, etc) hosted on a server that requires you to introduce your domain user and password.

Is there a way for me to know which are those services that require that authentication?.

If it runs as a service you can check the Log On As column here for the credentials being used. (services.msc)
