Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
Hi @Thomas Paonessa,
Based on what you described, this usually happens when the Microsoft 365 Nonprofit subscription is no longer active, has expired, or requires re-verification.
A good first step would be to sign in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center using an admin account. If you’re an end user, please reach out to your administrator, as the steps below may require certain permissions to complete.
Once you’re in, I’d recommend checking Billing > Your products to review the current status of your nonprofit subscription. If it shows as expired, past due, or suspended, there should be prompts available to guide you through reactivation. Sometimes you may also see a notification about nonprofit verification. If so, follow that link to the Microsoft Nonprofit Hub and complete the re-verification process.
It’s worth noting that nonprofit grant licenses don’t renew automatically. Your organization needs to complete a re-verification periodically, and once that’s approved, the licenses can be renewed for a new term.
If you don't see the banner, you can follow this step here to complete the verification
- Sign in with a Global Administrator account to the Microsoft Nonprofit Hub.
- Go to Account > Eligibility and complete the nonprofit eligibility re‑verification.
- Once Microsoft approves the re‑verification, the grant‑based licenses can be renewed for a new term and reassigned to users in the Microsoft 365 admin center.
After your subscription is active again, you’ll want to go back into the admin center and confirm that licenses are available under Billing > Licenses. From there, head to Users > Active users, open each user account, and reassign the appropriate licenses. Once that’s done, ask users to sign out and back into their Office apps. In most cases, access is restored within a short time.
If you run into any issues or feel stuck at any point during the process, you may also consider reaching out and opening a support ticket directly to Microsoft Nonprofit Support for further assistance.

Hopefully this helps suggest a few approaches you can try and guides you toward the right place to get support for your nonprofit organization.
