[Article] Community Tip: Get the most out of active questions
Whether you're looking for help or helping others, engaging in recent and active questions is usually the best way to get the most value from the community.
As a general guideline, questions with no replies in the past 90 days are typically considered inactive. While there are exceptions, starting a new question or contributing to a more recent one will usually lead to better outcomes.
If you're asking a question
If you find an older thread that looks similar to your issue, consider creating a new question instead of replying to it. Even if the symptoms seem alike, your situation may have a different cause or solution. Starting a new question also gives you the best chance of receiving timely support, as many contributors may no longer be following older threads.
If you're helping others
When choosing questions to answer, it's generally best to focus on recent and active threads. The original poster of an older question may have already resolved the issue or moved on, and replying to an old thread sends notifications to previous participants even when the thread is no longer active. Some older threads were posted by users whose profiles no longer exist, such as "Anonymous" users, so the original poster will never see your reply.
That said, there are times when contributing to an older thread might be appropriate, especially if:
- A newly released feature, update, or official fix now resolves the issue.
- You're correcting outdated or inaccurate information that could mislead future readers.
- You have important new information that significantly changes the original guidance or outcome.
Thank you for helping keep Q&A current, helpful, and welcoming for everyone!
