How to send to a mail list

How to send an email to a mail list, without exceeding the maximum number of emails in a day. I have two mail lists set up with about 30 to 40 in each list. But my email won't go through, because I get a System Administrator message back, saying I have exceeded the number of emails permitted in a day (even when I haven't sent any in that particular day). My understanding was that if I used a mail list, they would go through with no problem. At different times, I have used a mail list with no problem at all, and now they won't go through. What can I do to make it work? Thank you for your assistance - much appreciated!
