VSS fails I keep more than 4 months of shadow copies

I have a shared volume on a guest VM with 2 TB total space and little under 1 TB of free storage.

I enabled shadow copies on that shared volume to run twice a day and the shadow copies are stored on the shared volume and the maximum size is to "No limit".

The problem is, when I keep the shadow copies for more than 3 months approx. , or when the shadow copies used storage goes 100 GB, The VSS fail when a back up job is scheduled to run on my guest VM ( Event viewer error is listed below).

I can temporarily fix this issue by manually deleting old shadow copies that are more than 3-4 month old.

However, I don't understand why the VSS would fail when the shadow copy storage reaches a certain limit even though the shared volume would still have 40-50% of free space
