Welcome Paula Underwood,
I understand how frustrating it can be when your camera image appears extremely dark, and adjusting contrast and other camera settings has not improved the picture.
Before proceeding, could you please clarify:
- Does the issue occur in all apps (Camera, Teams, Zoom, etc.) or only in one app?
- Is this a built-in webcam or an external USB camera?
In the meantime, you can try these steps:
Option 1: Check camera privacy settings
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera
- Make sure Camera access is turned On
- Ensure your apps are allowed to access the camera
Option 2: Test the camera in the Windows Camera app
- Open the Camera app
- Check whether the image is also dark there
Option 3: Disable automatic image adjustments
- Open the Camera app
- Select Settings
- Turn off any available automatic brightness, low-light compensation, or HDR options
Option 4: Update the camera driver
- Open Device Manager from the Start menu
- Expand Cameras
- Right-click your camera and select Update driver
Option 5: Reinstall the camera device
- Open Device Manager from the Start menu
- Right-click the camera and select Uninstall device
- Restart the computer
I hope the steps above help you deal with your issue.
