Azure subscription disconnected from account

Hello,

some time ago, I received e-mail to active MFA on my account, while I was trying to do that, I might have accidentally changed my main admin account from external to internal account and as a result of this, I lost access to my subscription. I can now log into my Azure account, but I don't see this subscription listed under the account. However, I am still getting e-mails about required changes to the resources in that subscription, but I can't access it.

Is there any way to either regain access to that subscription or delete/deactivate it?

Thank you

Hi @Irina L what you describe (still receiving emails about the subscription’s resources, but not seeing the subscription in the Azure portal) is commonly consistent with either:

  1. the subscription still exists, but your sign-in account no longer has the right directory/tenant context and/or permissions to view it, or
  2. access was removed because the subscription’s billing/admin context changed (for example, if your tenant/directory selection changed), or the subscription was canceled/disabled.
  1. First check the correct directory/tenant + “Subscriptions” blade

In the Azure portal, make sure you’re viewing the subscription from the directory/tenant where it was created and where you still have access.

You can also check your subscriptions list via the Subscriptions blade:

If your subscription doesn’t show up there, that strongly suggests your account no longer has sufficient access on that subscription/tenant scope (RBAC or tenant mismatch), even if the subscription is still active enough to generate emails.

  1. If the subscription is disabled (reactivate/deploy again)

If your subscription was disabled due to billing/spending/credits/being canceled by the account administrator, the Microsoft guidance is to reactivate it (only possible if you’re the appropriate administrator).

Key reactivation flow (when applicable):

  • Go to Subscriptions in the Azure portal
  • Select the canceled subscription
  • Choose Reactivate

If reactivation is relevant but you still can’t see the subscription, you’ll need billing/account ownership restoration (next section).

  1. Create a billing support request (recommended in your case):

Azure Billing support request link: create a support request.

1.From the resource menu, in the Help section, select Support + Troubleshooting. In the Support + Troubleshooting pane on the right, type "Billing" in the search box, select Billing, and then click Next.

2.Select the subscription and click Next. You will be presented with some suggestions to resolve your issue. If none of these apply, please follow the steps below.

sc1

3.Scroll down and you will find an option to Contact Support. From there, select Create a support request.

sc2

4.Enter the problem description (Issue type - Billing, Subscription, Summary - Billing, Problem type - Assistance with Bill, Problem subtype - Help with a billing discrepancy)

5.If the solutions appear again, click on 'Return to support request'. Click Next, and you will then be able to create the billing support ticket.

Hi Irina,

Based on what you've described, it sounds like the Azure subscription still exists, but your user account is no longer associated with the correct Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD) tenant or no longer has the required RBAC permissions to view the subscription.

Here are the steps I'd recommend:

  1. Verify you're signed into the correct tenant
    • In the Azure portal, click your account in the top-right corner and select Switch directory.
    • Check whether the subscription appears under another Microsoft Entra tenant.
  2. Check your subscription access
    • If you know the Subscription ID, ask an existing Global Administrator, User Administrator, or Subscription Owner in the original tenant to verify whether your account still has access.
    • If your account was changed from a guest (external) account to a member (internal) account, it may have become a different identity, causing your previous role assignments to no longer apply.
  3. Recover access
    • If another administrator is available, they can reassign you an appropriate Azure RBAC role (such as Owner or Contributor) on the subscription.
    • If you're the only administrator and no one can access the subscription, you'll need to contact Azure Support. They can assist with subscription ownership recovery after verifying ownership of the subscription.
  4. If you only want to cancel the subscription
    • A subscription can only be canceled by someone with sufficient permissions on that subscription. If you've lost all access, Azure Support will need to assist after validating ownership.

Since you're still receiving emails about resources in the subscription, it's a good indication that the subscription is still active. The issue is most likely related to tenant association or access permissions rather than the subscription having been deleted.

If you still have any of the following, it will help speed up recovery:

  • Subscription ID
  • Billing account information
  • Original tenant (directory) name or ID
  • The email address that originally owned the subscription

Providing those details to Azure Support will help them locate and verify ownership of the subscription more quickly.

    Hey there, Irina L

Sorry for the delay in responding to you. Please can you speak to Azure Support by opening a support request with the billing team through the help & support blade here: https://portal.azure.com/#blade/Microsoft_Azure_Support/HelpAndSupportBlade

Once you create a support request, they will be able to investigate what has happened. Please let me know if you have any trouble with creating a support request.

    Thanks,
    Nathan
