Why are there bracketed numbers at the end of word or pdf files

I've been copying files from one drive to another folder (i.e. local "c" drive) and many of they are showing up with random numbers in brackets at the end of the file names

What you're seeing is commonly associated with duplicate filenames during a copy operation. If a file with the same name already exists in the destination folder, Windows may add a number in parentheses, such as (1) or (2), to keep each file name unique rather than replacing an existing copy.

As a quick check:

1. Sort the destination folder by Name.
2. Look for another copy of the same file without the bracketed number.
3. Compare the file size or modified date to determine whether both copies are needed.

If the numbered files are appearing even though no matching filenames exist in the destination folder, please share a few example filenames or a screenshot of the folder view. That would help determine whether another file management or sync process may be contributing to the renaming behavior.

When the operating system appends a number to the name of a copied file, the cause is usually that a file with the same original name existed in the target.
