How to stop getting the message "Your device has run into a problem and needs to restart"

The title says it all. I get this message every few days while on the internet. The computer (HP Pc) immediately restarts and seems OK after that. When I start Chrome, it tells me that Chrome was shut down incorrectly and offers to restore my tabs. This also works fine.
How can I stop this from repeatedly happening?

This behavior can occur for several reasons. It is necessary to investigate.

Please see if your computer created minidump files.

These files are in C:\Windows\Minidump.

(If you don't have a Minidump folder, check if it is in the plural Minidumps.)

Copy any files you have to your desktop and store them in a ZIP file. Then, upload the ZIP file to the cloud (OneDrive), choose to share it, and get the link.

Then, post the link to the ZIP file here so I can have a look.

Well I tried. I found the dump files (5 of them) and sent them to my desktop. When I tried to zip them I got a message saying "An unexpected error is keeping you from copying the file, etc"

Sorry for the delay in reply. I've been offline.

The reason you got the 0x80070005 error is because C:\Windows\Minidump is a protected system folder.

This usually happens if you used the right-click "Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder" option directly (which tries to read from the protected folder), or if Windows asked for Administrator permission during the copy and blocked it.

To make sure we bypass this protection, let's try this precise sequence:

Open File Explorer and go to the folder C:\Windows\Minidump;

Copy the minidump files to the desktop;

(Select the files, press "Ctrl+C", click on an empty space on the Desktop, and press "Ctrl+V".)

Place the minidump files that are on the desktop in a ZIP file;

(Select the minidump files on your desktop, right-click on one of them, and select "Compress to > Zip File")

Upload the ZIP file to the cloud (OneDrive), choose to share it, and get the link.

OK-- I created a zip file of one dump file, but I can't figure out how to upload it to OneDrive (I hate one drive!). Is there any other way I can share that with you?

You should be able to attach files with the "clipper" icon. I'm not sure if zip files are accepted, but you can always lure it by adding .txt to the file extension, and then mention this in your post.

I have undeleted your post above that caught by the spam filter. However, it is better to attach such long dumps as text than pasting them into a window. (I assume that the file you wanted to share has the same contents as the post above, but I wasn't sure.)

Go to OneDrive

Open: https://onedrive.com

Sign in if needed.

Locate your ZIP file

Browse to the folder where the .zip file lives.

Click once on the ZIP file

This highlights it.

Click the “Share” button

Top bar or right‑click → Share.

Choose link permissions

You’ll see options like:

Anyone with the link---- use this please. It only shares that one file.

People in your organisation

Specific people

Then choose:

Can view (recommended for ZIPs)

Can edit (only if you want them to replace the file)

Click “Copy link”

Paste the link wherever you need — chat, email, forum, etc.

Done.
