Installing Windows 11 Pro to USB Thumbdrive

Question

So I've got the windows ISO. Mounted it and got setup going. Downloaded the updates. My question is I feel like I've tried installing windows before and it wouldnt let me choose the drive/partition that i wanted it installed to so I'm nervous about going through with the install so it doesnt wipe my already installed Windows.

Just a quick point that may help before you proceed: a standard Windows 11 installation is intended for internal storage drives, and installing directly to a USB thumb drive is generally not supported through the normal Windows Setup process. Because of this, the USB device may not appear as a valid installation target, even if it is detected by the system.

If your goal is to run Windows from a USB device, you may need to use a dedicated Windows-to-USB solution rather than the standard installer. This can help avoid confusion when the installation wizard does not offer the USB drive as a destination.

Are you saying your drive doesn't even show up for you to select at that step, or you selected it but it wouldn't work? If it is the latter, you need to delete all partitions first.

Either way, can you get me a photo of that step when you do it again, that way I can tell you more precisely what to do, since everyone's computers can be different and the list can look different.
