Hello @David Twigg
For clarification, IMAP is a protocol that lets you connect an external email account to Outlook so you can send and receive mail. However, IMAP only handles email folders. It does not support calendars, contacts, or Teams integration. That is why Outlook will not let you set an IMAP account as the primary account for calendar or Teams.
- Outlook requires an Exchange or Microsoft 365 account as the “main” account to enable calendar and Teams features.
- IMAP accounts are limited to email only. Even if you add them, they cannot provide calendar or Teams functionality.
To unlock calendar and Teams, you need an Outlook.com or Microsoft 365 account set as the primary account. You can still keep your IMAP account for mail.
1/ Create an Outlook.com account (if you don’t already have one)
- Go to Outlook.com.Sign up for a free account.
- Add the Outlook.com account to Outlook
- Open Outlook.
- Go to File > Add Account.Enter your Outlook.com email and password.
- Complete the setup.
2/ Add the Outlook.com account to Outlook
- Open Outlook.
- Go to File > Add Account.
- Enter your Outlook.com email and password.
- Complete the setup.
3/ Set Outlook.com as the primary account
- In Outlook, go to File > Account Settings > Account Settings.
- Under the Email tab, select your Outlook.com account.
- Click Set as Default.
4/ Keep your IMAP account for email
- Your IMAP account remains in Outlook for sending and receiving mail.
- Outlook.com will handle calendar, contacts, and Teams.
5/ Manage meeting invites
- When you receive meeting invites in your IMAP inbox, forward them to your Outlook.com account.
- Accept them in Outlook.com so they appear in your calendar and sync with Teams.
6/ Overlay calendars for visibility
- In Outlook, open the Calendar view.
- Select both calendars (IMAP and Outlook.com).
- Use the Overlay option to view them together in one grid.
If you still need my assistance, please come back with screenshots or any additional details so I can review it again and see if there’s anything more I can help you with.
Have a nice day!
