OneDrive says it's full but I still have half a TB left

I've lost a day's working time trying to resolve this and can't find any solution. I can't find any way to contact Microsoft directly via a chat function or phone call and I'm at my wits end! Please help if you can. I've already done the following:

  • Emptied both my online OneDrive and OneDrive app recycle bins (and my computer's recycle bin for good measure)
  • Signed out and back in to OneDrive
  • Unlinked my PC and then relinked it
  • Restarted my computer several times
  • Looked for 'storage metrics' under Settings to try and see if file version histories are the issue but I don't have this option in my menu.
  • Clicked on the 3 dots next to individual files but I don't have version history options there either

I don't even know if version history is the issue, as surely those would show in my overall allowance anyway? My allowance as mentioned is still showing around 500GB remaining.

Thanks

Based on the information you've shared, we've covered the troubleshooting I would normally recommend. I'll let another Community member take a look in case they have other suggestions or are aware of a known issue.

Thanks for the clarification, and I appreciate you sharing the screenshot. I also apologize if my previous reply came across the wrong way—that wasn't my intention. I only wanted to rule out one of the more common causes since it's something I see fairly often in the Community.

At this point, there are a couple of additional things you can try:

    1. Reset the OneDrive client (if you haven't already):
      • Press Windows + R and run: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\OneDrive.exe /reset
      • Wait a minute or two. If OneDrive doesn't restart automatically, run: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\OneDrive.exe
    2. Check whether OneDrive on the web allows uploads.
      • Try uploading a small file directly at https://onedrive.live.com.
      • If the upload succeeds, it suggests your cloud storage quota is working correctly and the issue is likely isolated to the sync client or app.
      • If the web version also reports insufficient storage, that would indicate an account-side quota issue.

Hi there! I am Ben a fellow user like you here in the community.

From your description, you've already tried most of the common troubleshooting steps, so I'd first like to clarify one thing because it's easy to confuse the two.

Windows local storage and OneDrive cloud storage are separate. If the 500 GB remaining refers to the free space on your PC's hard drive (for example, your C: drive), that won't affect how much storage is available in OneDrive. OneDrive uses its own cloud storage quota, which is independent of your computer's local storage.

To verify your OneDrive storage, sign in to: https://onedrive.live.com

If OneDrive on the web also shows that you still have plenty of available cloud storage, then the "OneDrive is full" message may indicate a storage quota synchronization issue rather than an actual lack of storage.

However, if your PC's local storage is what's running low, you can free up space by ensuring your files have been successfully backed up to OneDrive, then using the Free up space option on synced files. This removes the local copy while keeping the file safely stored in OneDrive, allowing you to download it again whenever needed.

If possible, please share a screenshot of the error or where you're seeing it. This will help me and other Community members better understand the issue. Just be sure to remove or hide any personal information before uploading it.
