Microsoft Teams Town Halls: can external anonymous guests join without being prompted to allow their browser to access their camera and microphone?

When creating a Teams Town Hall with public event access, will the guests who are viewing only always be asked for their name, as well as camera and microphone permissions from their browser? If they are not able to present in the Town Hall, why do they need camera and microphone permission? Is there a way to configure the Town Hall so that they can be entered straight into viewing the stream, without further steps or prompts?

• Browser Sandbox & Pre-Join Screen: Web browsers handle all media sessions uniformly. When Teams launches in a browser tab, the web app requests hardware permissions (Camera and Microphone) at the browser level before joining the session, regardless of the user's role in the event.
• Town Hall Capability Features: Even though Town Hall attendees join with their microphones and cameras disabled by default, Teams includes interactive features such as "Raise Hand" or "Bring Attendee on Screen" (allowing organizers to bring an attendee into the live stream). The browser prompts for permissions upfront so those features can function seamlessly if triggered.  
• Name Prompt: The name field on the pre-join page allows anonymous guests to identify themselves for moderated Q&A and attendance logs.

No, there is currently no configuration setting to completely eliminate the browser hardware permission prompt or the pre-join name entry for web users.

Because hardware permission checks are enforced by the client browser (e.g., Chrome, Edge, Safari) rather than Microsoft Teams settings, the browser will always ask for device permissions on the pre-join screen.

To ensure the smoothest possible experience for your external attendees, you can share these quick instructions in your event invitation:

1. Name Field: Guests may type any display name or pseudonymous initials to proceed into the event stream.
2. Permissions Prompt: Guests can simply click "Block" or "Don't allow" when the browser prompts for camera and microphone access. Blocking these permissions will not prevent them from viewing or hearing the live Town Hall stream.
