Will AI-200 Replace AZ-204 After Its Retirement?

I understand that the AZ-204: Developing Solutions for Microsoft Azure exam is scheduled to retire on July 31, 2026.

Will AI-200: Developing AI Cloud Solutions on Azure be the official replacement for AZ-204? Does AI-200 cover the same Azure development skills, or is it more focused on building cloud applications that integrate artificial intelligence?

I would also like to know what will happen to the Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate certification after AZ-204 retires. Should current Azure developers prepare for AI-200, or will Microsoft introduce another certification for general Azure application development?

AI-200 focuses on the skills developers need to deliver solutions on Azure with demanding performance and responsiveness requirements. The course covers similar ground as AZ-204, but with a greater focus on code and observability. The certification will let developers show they can deliver solutions on Azure with a variety of architectural requirements.

AI-200 Developing AI Cloud Solutions on Azure is the replacement for AZ-204

There is a fair amount of overlap between AZ-204 and AI-200 but with greater emphasis on using AI when building solutions

When the Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate certification after AZ-204 retires at the end of July it will not be able to be renewed and your certification will be moved to the Historical certifications when it reaches its expiration date .

As the post says, you should prepare for AI-200. There will be no general Azure application development exams - all the focus of new exams/certifications is on agentic AI.

Yes. The available Microsoft context indicates that AI-200 is the replacement path associated with AZ-204 retirement, but it is not the same exam with the same scope.

    Supported points:

    1. AZ-204 retires on July 31, 2026.
The AZ-204 study guide explicitly states that the exam retires on July 31, 2026.
    2. AZ-204 currently maps to the Azure Developer Associate certification.
Earlier Microsoft certification content states AZ-204 is the exam required for Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate.
    3. AI-200 is positioned as the replacement training/exam path, not a like-for-like general Azure developer exam.
The retired course listing shows AZ-204T00: Develop Solutions for Microsoft Azure is replaced by AI-200T00: Develop AI cloud solutions on Microsoft Azure.
Partner Center announcements also state that Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate is being replaced by Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate in partner skilling contexts.
    4. AI-200 appears to be more AI-focused.
Based on the official names alone, AZ-204 is about Developing Solutions for Microsoft Azure, while AI-200 is about Develop AI cloud solutions on Microsoft Azure. That indicates a shift toward AI cloud solution development rather than a pure continuation of broad Azure application development under the same name.
    5. What happens to Azure Developer Associate after AZ-204 retires?
The context shows the certification is being retired/replaced in Microsoft partner skilling updates by Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate. It does not provide a separate new certification for non-AI general Azure application development.
    6. What current Azure developers should prepare for
If the goal is to follow the replacement path shown in the available Microsoft materials, AI-200 is the relevant next certification. However, the context does not confirm that Microsoft will introduce another certification for general Azure application development after AZ-204 retires.

    So the direct answer is:

    • AI-200 is the replacement path indicated in the available Microsoft materials.
    • It is more AI-oriented than AZ-204, not simply the same Azure developer exam under a new code.
    • The context does not show another announced replacement for general Azure application development beyond the Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate path.

AI-generated content may be incorrect. Read our transparency notes for more information.
