unable to add payment method to azure account

I have a couple of Azure accounts which have worked well. We'll call them Able and Baker. Able uses some resources that incur charges, so I have a credit card for that account, which has been working fine for years. That credit card has just expired, and my bank has given me a new one, so I tried to add the new card to Able. It was rejected - apparently because the name on the card doesn't match. So I tried some other credit, debit and charge cards from 3 different banks. All were rejected - some with (spurious) name mismatches, some because the bank declined. I checked with the bank and they tell me the request was not presented.

So I just tried the new card with Baker, and the card was accepted immediately.

To me, that says that billing in Able is broken.

It's not my cards - they can be added to Baker without issue.

My next step looks like migrating all my resources and services from Able to Baker, which is hugely expensive of my time. But at least I'll be able to pay for the resources.

On 8th August, I'll be getting a bill from Microsoft for £0.64 (approx) for my July usage. I can't add a card to Able to pay it. The current card is expired. I'm not aware of any way to just phone in a payment. Maybe I just wait until the arrears department rings me?

Any ideas on how to fix Able so it accepts a card?

Hi Bill,

Please create a free Billing support request so that a billing support engineer can fix the issue. It is important to get this on record in case the issue isn't fixed before your invoice is generated and payment fails.

1. To start the process, please navigate to below link:

https://portal.azure.com/#create/Microsoft.Support

2. Issue type: Billing, Problem type: Manage Payment Methods, Problem subtype: Need help updating or adding a credit card, similar to below screenshot:

3. Click Next. There will be a delay, then some Solutions will be displayed. DO NOT CLICK on any of these, instead click Return to support request in upper left corner.

4. Click Next to advance to Additional details tab. For Issue Category, select Azure - Billing Issue, if you don't have paid support plan choose Basic, continue filling out form, click Next, review information, click Create to submit case. You should receive an automated email within minutes and be contacted by support within 1 business day.

Please click Accept Answer and upvote if the above was helpful.

Thanks.

Hello @Bill Powell ,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

When the same cards work fine on another Microsoft account but get rejected here.

A few things usually help in this situation:

  1. Double-check the billing profile details Go to Cost Management + Billing → select the billing account/profile for Able → Payment methods (or Address). Make sure the name and billing address match exactly what the bank has on file (including any middle initial, “St” vs “Street”, postcode format, etc.). Even small differences can trigger name-mismatch or silent declines.
  2. Remove the expired card first Delete the old, expired payment method completely, wait 15–30 minutes, then try adding the new card as a fresh payment method (don’t try to edit the old one).
  3. Try a clean browser session Use an InPrivate/Incognito window or a different browser. Microsoft’s own guidance notes that browser state can sometimes interfere with payment validation.

Official steps for adding or replacing a payment method are here: Add, update, or delete a payment method

And the troubleshooting guide for declined cards is here: Troubleshoot a declined card

If the cards still won’t add after the above, this is almost certainly an account-specific validation issue on Able (especially since the identical cards work on Baker). In that case the quickest path is to open a Billing support request from the Azure portal:

Help + support → Create a support request → Problem type = Billing → Category related to Payment methods.

Include the subscription/billing account ID for Able, the exact error messages, and a note that the same cards are accepted without issue on another Microsoft account. Billing support can usually clear the validation block on their side.

Regarding the small invoice due on 8 August once a valid payment method is attached you should be able to pay it normally (or it will be charged automatically if set as default). Support can also help if the account ends up in a restricted state before then.
