My system PC:

Windows 11 Pro 25H2 x64 bit OS with OS Build 26200.8894

Most recent update: 7/19/2026 update (KB5121767)(26200.8894)

AMD Ryzen 5800X 8-core (3.8 GHz), 32 GB RAM

Graphics NVIDIA G Force GT 710 (2 GB), 3.24 TB used of 7.28TB storage

As a result of the most recent update I am unable to open Word, Excel, Photos, and pdf files. Any new docs I create will open properly but the files previous to the update will not. I also tried using my backed up files, copies on a thumb drive, but I am told they too are corrupted. All of these files worked before the update.

I'm not sure if Photo is an Office program or a Win 11 app. When I run the app and try to open any of my photos I get "looks like we don't support this file format" error. Photos no longer supports .jpg files? These personal photos, and all others I've tried, opened fine before this update using the same Photo app.

This has happened with past updates but was self-correcting after a subsequent update but this one has not and it has been nearly a week.

Any ideas how I can fix this major headache #2?

Thank you Nora.

I uploaded it to Excel on the web. The error message said I should open it as an earlier version of Excel. This confirms my suspicions that these files were corrupted or were recognized as corrupted by the update(s).

The way it shows to open it in and the command for an earlier version (version history or something like that) of Excel is not on my drop down menu as a choice as indicated in the web explanation

The “earlier version” option refers to the file’s Version history, not an earlier release of the Excel app. Version history is available only when the file was previously stored and edited in OneDrive or SharePoint. If the file was stored locally and only recently uploaded, there may be no earlier version available, which explains why the option is missing.

Have you also tried the other suggested steps (Online Repair for Office, DISM and SFC, uninstalling KB5121767 and System Restore)? Please let me know which steps you have completed and whether any of them changed the behavior.

Sorry for the inconvenience you’re experiencing. From what you described, I understand that after installing the recent Windows 11 update, previously saved Word, Excel, PDF, and JPG files no longer open, although newly created files still work normally.

Please try the options below and check whether the issue continues:

Open one affected file on another computer or upload a copy to Word/Excel for the web. If it opens there, keep the original files unchanged and do not run recovery tools on every file.
Repair Office: Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Office/365 > three dots > Modify > Online Repair. Then repair Photos under Installed apps > Microsoft Photos > Advanced options > Repair.
Open Terminal as administrator and run: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth followed by: sfc /scannow
KB5121767 is an out-of-band update aimed at a specific issue affecting some Intel-based Dell devices. Since this PC uses an AMD processor and the files opened normally before the update, you can consider removing it from Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates. After restarting the PC, check whether the affected files open again.

If the issue continues, use System Restore and select a restore point created before KB5121767 was installed on July 19, 2026.

Note: System Restore does not require a previous file backup, but Windows must already have created a restore point from before the issue began. It rolls back system files, drivers, settings, and installed programs without normally affecting personal documents or photos. However, since some files are showing as corrupted, I still recommend copying all important files to another drive before proceeding.
