Sole Global Administrator locked out after losing Microsoft Authenticator device

Hello Microsoft Team,

I am the owner of a small business and the only Global Administrator of my Microsoft 365 Business Standard tenant, which was purchased directly from Microsoft.

I lost the mobile phone that had Microsoft Authenticator installed. I still know my administrator username and password, but every new sign-in requires the Authenticator code, so I cannot access the Microsoft 365 Admin Center.

My Outlook desktop is still working on my PC and laptop, so I have not lost access to my mailbox, but I cannot register Microsoft Authenticator on my new phone because I cannot complete the existing MFA challenge.

There are no other Global Administrators in my tenant who can reset my authentication methods.

Could a Microsoft moderator please advise the official recovery process? As I am the sole Global Administrator, I believe this requires escalation to the Microsoft Data Protection team to reset my MFA registration.

Thank you.

Thank you very much for your guidance.

I have already tried the Microsoft Support telephone number listed for Pakistan. Unfortunately, the recorded message says that the number has been closed due to non-payment, so I cannot reach Microsoft Frontline Support.

Since I purchased Microsoft 365 Business Standard directly from Microsoft, could you please advise an alternative official contact method (telephone, callback, or online support) to reach the Microsoft Data Protection Team?

    Thank you for your assistance.

    Hi HAFIZ,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Based on your description, I understand that you are unable to sign in because you are not receiving the MFA verification code.

Since you are the only administrator in the tenant, you will need to contact Microsoft's Data Protection Team to request an MFA reset for your account.

Please look up the appropriate support hotline for your region and contact Microsoft's frontline support. Then, ask them to create a support ticket for you through the following resource:

Customer service phone numbers – Microsoft Support.

    User's image

In this situation, Microsoft's Data Protection Team is the only team that has the specialized tools and procedures required to verify your identity and securely restore access to your administrator account.

Please note that forum moderators do not have the authority to directly intervene in user accounts, especially for issues related to:

    • Account sign-in
    • Password resets
    • MFA authentication
    • Changing or restoring access permissions

Tips for Navigating the IVR System (Automated Phone Support)

To help you navigate the IVR system more effectively, please refer to the guidance below:

    1. When calling the support number, you may hear an introductory message for approximately 30 seconds (for example: "You can visit the link..."). You can skip this and wait until the system presents the available options.
    2. Then:
      • Press 1 for a business email account.
        • Press 1 again to select technical support.

In some regions, the initial interaction may be fully automated. Below is a sample dialogue that you can prepare in advance:

    • What kind of problem are you experiencing? Answer: Authenticator
    • What products do you use? Answer: Microsoft 365 for Business (or Office 365 for Business)
    • Is this for an education or company account? Answer: Company account
    • Are you an administrator? Answer: Yes
    • Are there any other administrators in your organization? Answer: No. I am the only administrator in my tenant.
    • Do you need a service request? Answer: Yes. I need to create a support ticket. Please transfer me directly to the Data Protection Team.

During the call, you may be asked to provide subscription-related information such as:

    • Company name
    • Billing information
    • Phone number
    • Alternate email address

This information helps the Data Protection Team verify your identity and securely assist you with restoring access to your account.

I hope this information is helpful. Please follow these steps and let me know if it works for you. If not, we can work together to resolve this.

Thank you for your patience and your understanding. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please feel free to share them in the comments on this post so I can continue to support you.

I look forward to continuing the conversation.
