To help narrow this down, could you please confirm:

• Has the keyboard backlight ever worked on this laptop?
• Do you see a keyboard backlight symbol on any key in the top F1–F12 row?
• What is the full product or model number of the laptop? Please do not share the serial number publicly.

In the meantime, please try the following:

• Look across the F1–F12 keys for a backlight symbol. On HP laptops, it may be on F4, F5, F11, or another function key.
• Press that key a few times to cycle through the available brightness levels.
• If nothing happens, try holding Fn while pressing the same backlight key.
• Shut down the laptop, wait about five seconds, turn it back on, and immediately press F10 repeatedly to enter the BIOS. If available, check whether Action Keys Mode is enabled under System Configuration.
