I've uninstalled and re-installed windows 11 but civilization IV, Civilization V and other games do not work - an error message appears saying something about a render failed. The screen flashes as if the game will start several times and then I get the message about the render failure.

If it works when the Intel UHD Graphics adapter is disabled, then the game itself is fine. The problem is almost certainly the interaction between the Intel integrated GPU driver and Windows 11. Based on my research there still an update for generic intel driver for your integrated graphics, you need to find a driver, it should be 31.x series, not 26.x.(current). If you can find it, you need to install it and try again checking the game.

The next thing is that makes me wonder if the Intel driver is reporting only the 4K display mode to the game. You need to try these settings.

    • Windows Display Settings → Display Resolution → 1920×1080
    • Display Scale → 100%
    • Then launch Civ IV.

Based on everything you've tried, this no longer looks like a missing DirectX since older games are working like doom II. The resolution change may be related, but I suspect it's a symptom rather than the root cause.

Try two things again mainly, try a compatibility mode on Civilization4.exe and Civ4BeyondSword.exe:

    Windows XP (Service Pack 3)

    Disable fullscreen optimizations

    Run as administrator

The next one is to delete the Civilization IV configuration files

    Delete or rename:

    Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4

    Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword

The game will recreate them the next time it starts.

Can you clarify this, part, "all other games play after some installing and uninstalling of games and graphics drivers. Civ IV and Civ IV Beyond the Coast are the only games that will not play." You mentioned that Beyond the Coast doesn't work. Did you mean Beyond the Sword?

If this is the situation that others games worked and CivIV and CivIV Beyond the Sword are the only ones not working. now I suspect this to be a missing legacy DirectX 9 component (since modern games are working) or a Windows 11 compatibility issue introduced by a recent update.

Can you tell me how did you install Civ IV? Is it using the Original installation CDs, Steam or something else?

    Hi!

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

To pinpoint the issue, could you provide the following:

The exact error message (or a screenshot of it).

    • Is this a desktop or laptop that you are using?
    • What graphics card do you have?
      • Intel ARC
      • NVIDIA (which model?)
      AMD (which model?)

Can you recall any recent changes on your computer before this happened?
