The best way to upgrade from Windows 11 Home to Windows 11 Pro is through the Microsoft Store. To begin, select the following shortcut to open the Microsoft Store to the Windows upgrade page.
Upgrade to Windows 11 Pro
When Windows is upgraded through the Microsoft Store, it detects whether the current installation of Windows 11 Home edition is activated and then guide accordingly.
Alternatively, you can upgrade to Windows 11 Pro manually
The following steps apply only to devices currently running an activated copy of Windows 11 Home. If Windows 11 isn't activated, Microsoft recommends activating Windows 11 Home first. For more information, see Activate Windows.
To upgrade from Windows 11 Home to Windows 11 Pro manually, first check which edition is running and the activation state:
Select Start
and then select Settings
> System
> Activation
.
Open Activation settings
In the System > Activation window:
- The edition of Windows is shown at the top of the window next to the Windows
logo.
- The activation state is shown next to Activation state. For details on the activation state, select Activation state.
Once Windows is confirmed that it's activated, check if you have a Windows Pro product key. For more information, see Find your Windows product key.
Select the appropriate scenario depending on if a Windows Pro product key is available:
Windows 11 Pro product key is available
Select Start
and then select Settings
> System
> Activation
.
Open Activation settings
Next to Change product key, select the Change button.
Note
If the User Account Control window appears, enter a user name and password of an account that has administrator privileges on the Windows device, and then select the Yes button.
In the Change Product Key window that opens, enter the 25-character Windows 11 Pro product key.
Select Next to start the upgrade to Windows 11 Pro.
Windows 11 Pro product key isn't available
Select Start
and then select Settings
> System
> Activation
.
Open Activation settings
Expand Upgrade your edition of Windows by selecting it.
Note
If Upgrade your edition of Windows isn't available, the edition of Windows 11 might already be at Pro, or edition upgrade might not be available.
Next to Upgrade in the Microsoft app under the Upgrade your edition of Windows section, select the Open Store button.
- When the Microsoft Store app opens, follow the instructions to upgrade to the Pro edition of Windows 11, making sure you're signed in with your Microsoft account when purchasing Windows 11 Pro.
- After confirming your purchase, you'll be prompted to install Windows 11 Pro and restart your Windows device.
