Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Hi James,
Having an institutional account does not always mean that it currently includes a license for the desktop version of Word. Your school controls the license, and it may have expired, been removed, or changed to a plan that only includes the web apps.
Open Word and go to File > Account. Check which account is signed in and what appears under Product Information. If another account is listed, sign out of all Office accounts, close Word, and sign back in using your institutional account.
You can also sign in at https://www.microsoft365.com using the same account. If you do not see an Install apps option, contact your school’s IT administrator and ask them to confirm that a Microsoft 365 license with desktop apps is still assigned to you.
If the license is active but Word still shows “Unlicensed Product,” try Microsoft’s activation troubleshooter here:
Are you using Windows or Mac, and what exact licensing message appears under File > Account?
Also, can you edit and save documents using Word on the Microsoft 365 website?
