Hello Afsana Hamid,
I understand that you’re trying to open an older document created in Word 2013 using Microsoft 365, but Word displays a message that it cannot be used because it is not the default program. This may happen if Windows has assigned that file type to another app, the Word file association was not registered correctly, or the Microsoft 365 installation needs repair.
Please try the options below and check whether the issue continues:
- Right-click a Word document, select Open with > Choose another app, choose the Word version you want to use, check Always use this app to open .docx files, then select OK. You may need to repeat this for older
.docfiles. - If that does not help, right-click Start > Installed apps (or Apps and Features), find the Microsoft 365 or Office version you want to keep, select the three dots > Modify, then run Quick Repair. If the problem remains, run Online Repair and restart the computer. See more: Repair an Office application
- If both Office 2013 and Microsoft 365 are listed, it is recommended that you uninstall the version you no longer use, as having multiple Office versions can cause file-association conflicts.
Please let me know how it goes after trying these steps, and I'll be glad to continue looking into it with you.
