Trebuchet MS licensing for medical device labels (UDI) — does Office 365 cover this?

Hi microsoft team,

I am a designer at a medical-tech company and we are currently developing an EEG amplifier. I would like to use Trebuchet MS on the UDI labels that will be physically affixed to the device.

We have an Office 365 Business/Enterprise subscription. Does this license cover using Trebuchet MS on printed labels for a manufactured commercial hardware product, or is a separate license required for this kind of use?

If a separate license is needed — which type applies, and roughly what does it cost?

Estimated volume: ~200 units/year

I already checked with MyFonts, who confirmed they can't advise on Microsoft-owned font licensing and pointed me to you directly. Any guidance, or a pointer to the right team, would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

    Hello @Katarína Bozáňová,

Thank you for providing the details of your intended use.

Based on Microsoft’s official Font Redistribution FAQ, Microsoft does not restrict the sale of printed or manufactured items that use fonts supplied with Windows, provided that the application used is not specifically licensed only for home, student, or non-commercial purposes. This includes commercial printed output such as books, logos, advertisements, reports, clothing, and other manufactured items: Font redistribution FAQ - Typography | Microsoft Learn

Therefore, based on the scenario you described, using Trebuchet MS to create and print UDI labels that are physically attached to your commercial medical devices should generally be considered permitted printed output. This assumes that your organization is using properly licensed Microsoft software and that the Trebuchet MS font file itself is not being installed, embedded in software or firmware, or redistributed with the medical device.

However, because your question involves a specific commercial and regulated medical-device scenario, the Community forum cannot provide a legally binding licensing determination. For a detailed review based on your organization’s Microsoft agreement, production workflow, and specific compliance requirements, I recommend opening a support ticket through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. Microsoft Support can route the request to the appropriate licensing or specialist team for further confirmation:

    • After signing in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, select Help & Support

    • Then you can type "Get help" and click on "Contact support". From there, you can choose your preferred support method, such as phone or email, and request that the case be reviewed by the appropriate team for further assistance.

When opening a support ticket, please make sure the Support Assistant (AI) in the Help panel is turned Off. Several customers have reported that the Contact Support option may not appear while the Support Assistant is enabled. Once the AI assistant is turned off, you should be able to enter a description of the issue and the Contact Support option will appear, allowing you to submit a ticket directly to Microsoft Support.

I hope this helps clarify the general guidance and points you toward the appropriate team for formal confirmation.

    Kind regards,
