Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
Hi, Nicole Wilkerson
Sorry you’re having trouble with Word. This is usually caused by an outdated Office build, saved activation information, or Word being signed in with an account that does not own the subscription.
First, check the macOS version under Apple menu > About This Mac. If the Mac runs macOS 12 or later, open Word and select Help > Check for Updates, then install all available updates. Current activation requires Office version 16.83 or later. Older macOS versions may leave Office in limited-functionality mode, even when the subscription is paid.
Next, visit Microsoft Services & subscriptions and confirm that Microsoft 365 is active. Then quit all Office apps, reopen Word, sign out of every account, and sign in with the exact email address shown on that subscription.
If activation still fails, use the official Office license removal tool for Mac, restart the Mac, and activate Word again. This clears damaged or outdated license information without deleting documents.
If possible, please share the macOS version and the exact activation error code.
Thank you for your patience in reading, I hope this information has been helpful to you.
