I have to sign into my authenticator app but I have to enter the code that they are sending to my authenticator account on the app, but I can not get the code because I am not signed in. It is making nl sense. I can not get into my account for school.

    Hi Klinger, Clair E
I understand how frustrating this must be, especially when you're unable to access your school account.

May I know if you are still able to sign in to your account using any alternative sign-in method, such as SMS?

If yes, you could access to this link: https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info to delete old Authenticator (if you had) and then register for new MFA on Microsoft Authenticator again.

If no, I recommend that you contact your organization’s administrator or IT department and ask them to follow this article to reset MFA for you: Manage authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication - Microsoft Entra ID |…. After that, you'll be able to register Microsoft Authenticator again.

For security and management reasons, only your organization’s IT administrators can manage access and MFA settings for work or school accounts. Microsoft Support cannot directly reset MFA for accounts that are managed by an organization.

Once you regain access, it's a good idea to set up an additional sign-in method if your school allows it (such as phone or email), so you’ll have a backup option in case something like this happens again.

For a school account, this usually means the account is configured to use Microsoft Authenticator, but the app is not available or not fully registered on the current device.

    Try these steps:

    1. On the sign-in screen, select Other ways to sign in, Sign-in options, or Use a different method.
    2. If another method is already registered, use it instead:
      • SMS text
      • Phone call
      • Email
    3. If no other method is available, go to your security info page and check whether another sign-in method is listed: Sign in
    4. If the Authenticator app is installed and the sign-in prompt offers push approval, use this flow:
      • Enter the username and select Next.
      • Select Send notification.
      • If needed, select Other ways to sign in > Approve a request on my Microsoft Authenticator app.
      • Open Authenticator on the phone, unlock it if required, enter the displayed number, and approve.
    5. If the phone was lost, the app was deleted, the account is not listed in Authenticator, or only Authenticator is configured, contact the school IT help desk and ask them to clear or reset the MFA settings so the account can be re-registered.

    Important:

    • Support agents cannot send verification codes or change account details for this scenario.
    • If there were many failed attempts, wait and try again later, or use a different MFA method if one is available.
    • It is strongly recommended to keep multiple sign-in methods on the account so one lost device does not block access.
