i recently started to game share with a family member and the problem is he can download my games but cant use my gamepass essential membership to play online since he doesn't have gamepass at all and its telling him an error code that basically to my understanding says there's a glitch with the Xbox servers and we did everything like restarting the Xbox to unplugging it and still nothing so what's the problem is it a new policy or is it just a active issue that cant be solved without waiting some time ?

    Hi Robert,

I've shared my Game Pass subscription and games with family before. Both with family members in the same household and with family members living in another house. Not aware of any new policies or issues that could be preventing game sharing from happening properly.

However, there was an Xbox server outage that started on 28 July. It affected everyone differently; some people could still play their disc-based games, some couldn't. Some couldn't access Game Pass. Some couldn't even sign in to their console at all.

You said that your family member could download your games after you enabled game sharing, but couldn't actually play any of them. It's quite possible that they were also affected by the Xbox outage, which is why they saw an error code when trying to open one of your games after downloading it.

Keen to try and help you out. Ask your family member to try again. If they still have issues, please answer the questions below.

Which Xbox is your home Xbox?

Is your home Xbox currently set as your personal Xbox? Or did you set your home Xbox to be the Xbox of the family member you're trying to share with?

To check this, complete the steps below on your personal Xbox first.

    1. Press the XBOX button on your controller to open the guide.
    2. Select Profile & system > Settings > General > Personalisation, and then select My home XBOX.

If your personal Xbox isn't currently set as your home Xbox, this will be shown on the screen.

    • To set your personal Xbox as your home XBOX, select Make this my home XBOX.
    • To remove this console as your home XBOX, select Make this my home XBOX and then Remove this as my home XBOX.

I got the information above from the official Xbox support page about how home Xbox and game sharing work.

What error code does your family member see when trying to use your Game Pass subscription?

A screenshot of the error code will be super helpful.
