Office 2019 perpetual licenses on macOS Catalina disabled by July 2026 licensing change – no escalation possible?

I am a long-time Microsoft customer (since 1985) and have used every Mac version of Excel from 1.0 through Office 2019. About a year ago I purchased two legitimate perpetual copies of Office 2019 for Mac specifically to run on my iMacs with macOS Catalina — the final operating system supported on this hardware and the last Office version (16.66) that Microsoft certified for Catalina.

In mid-July 2026 a change to Microsoft’s licensing and certificate system made these perpetual licenses unable to activate on Catalina (error 0x0 after signing in). I have completed all standard troubleshooting: License Removal Tool, full uninstall and reinstall, Keychain and cache clearing, Safe Mode, etc.

Front-line and subsequent support agents have refused to escalate the case, stating that Office 2019 is end-of-support and that the only options are to buy a newer version of Office or upgrade the hardware/OS. Neither is viable for me. Excel Online cannot run the VBA macros or handle the number of linked workbooks I rely on, and my iMacs continue to work perfectly for all other purposes.

I am not asking for new features or ongoing updates. I am asking whether there is any remaining path to restore full desktop functionality of a perpetual Office 2019 license on the last supported platform for which it was sold, or whether Microsoft’s official position is that these licenses are now permanently unusable on Catalina.

Has anyone else in the same situation (perpetual Office 2019 + Catalina + 0x0 after the July 2026 change) found any resolution beyond “buy new software or new hardware”?

Hello,

Starting July 13, 2026, Office 2019 for Mac entered reduced functionality mode because its licensing certificate can no longer be updated. Office may still open documents, but it can no longer activate for editing, saving, or creating files. The 0x0 error is part of that activation failure.

Microsoft confirms that Office 2019 for Mac cannot be updated to the required version, and reinstalling Office 2019 will not resolve it.

The available options are:

1. Use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint online for free through Microsoft 365 for the web.
2. Purchase a supported version such as Office Home 2024.
3. Subscribe to Microsoft 365.

Your existing documents are not deleted or damaged, but Office 2019 for Mac can no longer be restored to full editing mode through activation troubleshooting.
