Windows 11 Home to Professional Upgrade – Activated as Enterprise Instead

Question

I recently upgraded a client's computer from Windows 11 Home to Windows 11 Professional using the built-in Microsoft Store purchase option. For some reason, the system upgraded to Windows 11 Enterprise instead, and the product is not activating.

Error Message:

"We can't activate Windows on this device because you don't have a valid digital license or product key. If you have a valid license or key, select Troubleshoot below. Error code: 0xC004C003."

Troubleshooting Attempted:

Ran the Windows activation troubleshooter – failed.

Attempted activation via command line – command returned success, but after reboot, the activation status still shows as "Not Activated" in Settings.

Tried the Microsoft online product activation wizard – after entering the product ID, the transaction failed because the system didn't recognize it as a valid product.

My Questions:

Why did the upgrade from Home to Professional result in Windows 11 Enterprise instead?

At this point, would the best course of action be to wipe and reinstall a fresh copy of Windows? If so, how can I install Windows Professional since the license was purchased through the Microsoft Store?

That key worked!! Tyvm Neil. And sorry about the late update, The user was ducking appointments for a bit, finally got a hold of the person. lol

This a known fault that occurs with some users.

Use the generic Pro product key in Change product key (in settings) to change to Pro edition and activation should happen automatically.
