Windows 11 automatically uses storage for a variety of background tasks, so it is not unusual for free space on the C: drive to gradually decrease over time even if you are not installing software. Windows Update caches, system restore points, hibernation files, virtual memory, application caches, and temporary files created by browsers and applications can all consume significant disk space.
Start by opening Settings > System > Storage and reviewing the storage categories. This provides a better breakdown than Disk Cleanup and can identify large folders, temporary files, installed apps, and user files consuming space. Enable Storage Sense to automatically remove temporary files, empty the Recycle Bin, and clean up old Downloads files if you choose.
You can also use Disk Cleanup, click "Clean up system files," and remove previous Windows installations (if present), Windows Update Cleanup, Delivery Optimization files, and temporary installation files. If you no longer need to roll back updates, these categories can free several gigabytes.
Check the size of the hibernation file. If you never use Hibernate or Fast Startup, open an elevated Command Prompt and run powercfg /hibernate off. This removes the hiberfil.sys file, which can reclaim several gigabytes. You can re-enable it later with powercfg /hibernate on if needed.
Review System Restore settings by searching for "Create a restore point." If many restore points exist, deleting older ones or reducing the maximum disk space allocated to System Protection can recover additional space.
Applications often create large caches that Disk Cleanup does not remove. Check browsers, Microsoft Teams, OneDrive, cloud storage clients, photo and video editors, and game launchers for cache-clearing options. If you use OneDrive, enabling Files On-Demand allows files to remain in the cloud until needed, reducing local disk usage.
If you want to identify exactly what is consuming space, use a disk analyzer such as TreeSize Free. These tools scan the drive and display the largest folders and files, making it easy to locate unexpected space usage that Windows' built-in tools may not reveal.
